Walt Freeman, master cabinetry craftsman and owner of The Savannah Cabinet Shop talks about kitchen plans, kitchen redesign trends and kitchen aesthetics. “Now is the best time in years to start that kitchen remodel” exclaims Walt.
Kitchen plans, much like any other type of design, are subject to the trends of the time in which they are designed. The trends of today fall into distinct categories that represent the priorities and tastes of our current time and culture. Succinctly, the current kitchen design trends are earth-friendly materials, high-tech devises, colorful aesthetics, convenient features, and a furniture-like feel.
Given our current ecological concerns, environmentally friendly materials and practices are becoming more of a concern for clients and designers alike. Many semi-custom and stock cabinetry lines are integrating environmental standards into their products and practices, most commonly through adopting the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturer’s Association (KCMA) guidelines. Custom cabinetry can be built using Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified lumber or naturally sustainable woods such as bamboo and lyptus. Many organizational components are also now available built out of bamboo. Get more information: http://www.thesavannahcabinetshop.com/designprocess.html.
In the last couple of years the use of commercial appliances gained popularity in home kitchen designs. This reflects a client desire for high tech gadgetry that is currently being integrated into more standard lines of appliances as well. Appliances such as refrigerators and ventilation hoods are now available with flat screen TVs built into them. Professional and residential ranges now offer multi-fuel options and can included interchangeable components such as grills and griddles. Dishwashers, microwaves, and refrigerators are all now being sold in drawer-like configurations for more flexible use. Appliances are also now being offered in a new variety of colors, though stainless steel is still the most commonly used.
The current trend in kitchen aesthetics is a colorful one. Kitchen cabinetry designs now often feature more than one finish, usually with an island or built-in feature finished in an accent color. Paint and glazing color selections, especially in semi-custom cabinetry, are growing to meet the client demand for a custom look on a tight budget. With colorful options in cabinetry, countertops and appliances, your truly unique kitchen design is easier to come by than ever.
